Dig Howitt

Dr Graeme Clark, the founder of Cochlear, first tested his bionic ear on a patient in 1978.

1978 was also the year Deng Xiaoping began China’s reform and opening, setting the country on its path of rapid economic development.

So, it is fitting that in 2018, as we celebrate the 45th anniversary of China-Australia diplomatic relations, we are witnessing the latest stage in the deepening of economic ties between our two countries.

The depth of economic complementarity between Australia and China is no better illustrated than in this groundbreaking ceremony we are witnessing today.

To be sure, Australia is and will remain a reliable source of minerals and resources for China, just as China continues to provide Australia with manufactured goods.

But we are now seeing the evolution of our economic relationship, to one where Australian innovation and high-tech expertise is meeting new demand from China as it undergoes its next stage of economic development.

Health and medical technology is but one of the many exciting new fields where our trade and investment relationship is reaching new heights.

And, as the Australian Consul-General in Chengdu, it gives me great pleasure to witness first-hand the benefits our strong and evolving economic ties bring to both sides.

Of course, the benefits are not only economic - Cochlear’s investment in China will also bring the gift of hearing even closer to the many people here in need.

In 1978, Deng Xiaoping and Dr Graeme Clark would not have foreseen that one day their actions would lead to Cochlear establishing its first manufacturing operation here in Chengdu.

But I’m sure they would see today as an important step in the development of our two countries’ close ties.

I wish Cochlear and the Sichuan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Association every success in their new and exciting venture.

Thank you.
